“Delusional” is just a nice way to say “psychotic”

The really sad thing, is that I come across people who say that they like the current president for this, that, and the other reason.  Or that they disliked the previous president for this, that, and the other reasons.  And I tell them, the things that you are saying are untrue.  And they become irate and demand proof.  And so I go off and pull the statistics off of multiple sources, many of the sources are statistics from actual government websites.  And spend considerable effort.  And I lay it out for them.  And I say, what you are saying is untrue and here is the proof and the reason why the things that you say you believe are incorrect.

I am a pretty bright guy.  I research and study because I worry about the future of the country and the negative impact on freedom that the continually escalating regulations and laws and taxes will have as well as the restrictions that will come additionally from the planned escalation of the cost of gas and electricity.  Obama said that he is planning to have to cost of energy, which affects the price of everything, “necessarily skyrocket.”  And his self-selected Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, said that he and Obama are not unhappy with the rise in the price of gas, they had just expected to make it happen more gradually.  Nothing about it going back down. It’s not.  He also said that they were wanting the price of gas here to rise to be the same as it is in Europe.  Which is $7 to over $9 a gallon.  And that’s not some vague time in the future, 20 years from now.  It’s in the next year or 2, or 3 at the latest.  That’s what they’re planning for our immediate future.  Not something I’M happy about or looking forward to.  I can afford it, but I have a lot of friends that live a little closer to the edge of their income than I do and they will struggle with it.  They will have major negative effects on their living because of it.  And that makes me angry because the US has fossil fuel energy supplies to last us over 800 years at less than the currently rising prices of gas.  Without nuclear.  Without wind.  Without algae.

So anyway, I lay all of this stuff out, even with these people knowing me and knowing how detail oriented and obsessive I am about figuring out all aspects of problems and the consequences, and it makes no impact on the beliefs of the people I talk to.  They ignore the numbers.  They do not check out or confirm any of the numbers themselves.  And they go on parroting the same things that I had just proven were inaccurate or incorrect.

In my job, I run across people that have beliefs that are fixed, unresponsive to reason, and false, not based in reality.  These beliefs are delusions.  Fixed, false beliefs.  Not real.  The people who I have been trying to discuss our current political situation and the consequences appear to be delusional.  They are enamored, sold on a concept to advocate for a system and policies that will not give them the results and good life that they seek.  It wakes me at night several nights a week.   And  nothing that I have found that is based on what things are actually happening seems to shake this fantasy.  It is not going to have a major negative effect on me and my family personally, because I have been afraid of it for years and have plans to address it. But it is going to have major negative effect on friends, relatives, close acquaintances that I care about.  It is going to hurt my fellow Americans.

Socialism always fails to deliver what it promises, when the productive lose the incentive to produce.  The redistribution runs out. Seizing all of the income from all of the millionaires and billionaires in the US won’t cover more than 120 days of the current spending plans.  And the uncovered expenses are just going up and up.

It is, Drrik, always easier to believe what may not be true rather than seek out things for oneself. It’s always easier to cling to emotionalism than step back with an objective eye. How do I know? I’ll give you two examples: my parents raised me with Christian principles. We went to Church, read the Bible, etc. They were strict, yet fair. Now when I got to late high school, they started backing off. Come to find out years later that was by design. They wanted me to test what I had been taught and not merely accept what they had said and taught me. They had faith that I would ultimately come to the truth. They were right.

Second, meeting and marrying my husband person set me further on the same path. Given his past profession, he was (and is) an investigator and remains a objective as possible. I have picked up on these traits and now question and investigate things on my own.

Sorry to babble on … your post kind of struck a chord with me.

You need to take that thought thru to its logical conclusion, Drrik. When people cannot be persuaded by truth, facts, logic, history or common sense then the problem is obvious: they are not motivated by the same things that motivate you, nor are they primarily motivated by what they profess.

It’s my theory that all liberalism is driven by the need liberals have (being the children that they are) to gratify some desire. It might be a desire for power. It might be a desire to be supported at the expense of others. It might be a desire to nurture their own egos. But their PRIMARY motivation is ALWAYS something other than what they profess it to be, and our mistake as conservatives trying to deal with liberals is to wrongly assume that they care about the same things we do. A liberal who is looking for a pat on the head because he cares so much about the environment or a leftie like Sandra Fluke who wants free contraception is never likely to be persuaded by facts, logic or a little thing like the Constitution. More importantly, they will never admit to being wrong and giving up what it is they really want.

So I’ve given up trying to persuade them and I just call them on their phoniness. It won’t make you any friends, though.

I think it is based on self dislike and projection of the same dislike and characteristics on others. I am unworthy of being free and would abuse others, therefore I need to be held in check. Therefore, you do too. And I will start with you.
Or is it a less mature us versus them, We are good. They must be bad. They muswt be envious and want to hurt us.
People that don’t believe in free markets don’t believe in freedom. Curious that they don’t start the villifying on the customers of the Starbucks with their ipads, since none of the bad stuff would be going on without those willing participants.
