Crotalus adamanteus_Eastern diamondback rattlesnake_the largest of the rattlesnakes and responsible for more deaths in the US than any other species. Will allow a close approach, but when feeling threatened it will shake its rattle back and forth both as a warning and as a distraction so that the threat focuses on the movement while the snake slowly moves fully half of its body off the ground in an S-shaped coil, waiting for the opportune moment to strike silently and suddenly and with the capability of inflicting multiple lethal doses of venom.
The attention of the more enlightened and less distracted world is focussed on the rattling of the Supreme Court as it worries and fidgets over the constitutionality of Obamacare and whether or not it can justify allowing the federal government’s executive branch to so egregiously overstep its historically limited role. The more distracted and less enlightened part of the country is just as captivated by the micro-drama unfolding in Florida, where an apparent casual burglar and thug-wanna-be was shot by an overly zealous neighborhood watch guy taking too seriously the threat of a late night stranger cutting through his frequently burgled gated neighborhood.
All this attention to things both not related to the Constitution and to this attempt to have the Supreme Court actually protect and defend the Constitution where the Congress has failed to and where Presbo intends not to. The rattle.
In the meantime, earlier this week on March 19, with little fanfare in the Presbo-supporting media, Presbo signed the National Defense Resources Preparedness executive order. Codifying and becoming law in 30 days unless Congress stops it. This for the first time ever, creates a law that the president, based on his determination of necessity, can commandeer virtually every resource, company, industry, manufacturing base, energy supply, healthcare resource, and citizen that exists within the United States to do his bidding and it, for the first time in our history, stipulates that the president does not need a war or calamity, or disaster in order to do it. It says that anything that he determines is necessary for us to be “prepared” is fine. This is the head of the snake that dispatches our republic while we are watching the rattling media-circus.
No limitation or impediment by waiting for Congress to act. No need to consider civil liberties or property rights. No limitation by the pesky Constitution at all. Virtual martial law for any purpose all the time. Not enough Chevy Volts in our arsenal to be ready for an attack on our infrastructure? Not a problem. Shoot a few million or billion dollars over to GM and order 15 or 20 thousand. And have to create some more jobs so that they will be maintained all the time, oiled and charged up and ready to go somewhere in event of a problem. Infrastructure a little shaky? Only need to invest in New Solyndra(old name’s not being used anymore). Or a dozen New Solyndras. Create a multiplicity of new uncompetitive solar cell or whatever companies and then it will be easy to run dollars back to campaign donors since they won’t be limited by that silly need to turn a profit. Not enough jobs being created? Set up new manufacturing plants to make _____. And then build warehouses to put it all in and hire folks to maintain it. FDR killed livestock and plowed under crops. Much more jsutifieable to stockpile them. And of course that delicious private civilian police force to maintain security and protect it all. Always wanted one of those. A lot easier to maintain power without having to depend on that right-wing military.
But even with this executive order making it all “legal” (wink, wink), won’t there be some political flak if there is not at least some semblance of a wag-the-dog war going on? Not a problem, because, stepping up to the gate, right on cue is Iraq, who appears glad to stand in as the unreasonable whipping boy and threat of uncivilized warmongering just in time to get all the jingoistic fever started and stirred up for the November election.
The October surprise is that the war with Iraq will have to be scheduled to start earlier, else it won’t have enough momentum to be worthwhile by November. The actual centrally-commanded de-facto dictatorship can then be ramped up over the next 4 years and Iraq won’t even matter. Which is just as well, since they probably won’t last very long in a fight anyway.
