United States law says that when coups occur, that we, the US, do not give money to the presumptive military dictatorship that gets set up. The elected government of Egypt has been deposed in a military coup
The law was written for when dictators depose elected, representative governments. What they had in Egypt was the latter in name only. Egypt was no more ready and able to vote for a representative government than the average ten year old would be ready to handle their own 45. After generations of being inculcated with the idea that sharia is good and a religious state is ideal, the population essentially was allowed to put a gun to their own head. They voted for what they had been indoctrinated (nudged) to vote for. When they saw the results, they realized they had been had. To use our law to now say “You made your bed…” does them no service and the spirit of the law no justice.
On the other hand, why the hell are we giving Egypt a billion and a half US tax dollars anyway? We have definitely not been getting our money’s worth.
